Reveal God’s Nature and Personality

It is easy to look at world events and feel like we are gritting our teeth and hanging on to a rollercoaster ride. But God is trying to impart something different to us. We are not victims, and we are not without recourse. God is raising up a people who are going to be effective because we have a relationship with Him. Out of that relationship, we will have His heart of love for the world, and we will be effective.

Moses knew how to leverage God and entreated Him to remember His covenant promises with His servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Exodus 32:13). But in a later encounter with God, Moses did not leverage the covenant. Instead, he appealed to the nature and personality of God. Moses declared, “The nations who have heard of Your fame will say, ‘Because the LORD could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, therefore He slaughtered them in the wilderness’” (Numbers 14:15-16).1 Interesting strategy. God wants to glorify His name in all the earth, so Moses continued praying, “Let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression” (Numbers 14:17-18). Thus, Moses appealed to God’s integrity and compassion.

As a result of seeing God’s personality, Moses knew His care, His lovingkindness, and His drive to abolish sin from the earth. After seeing the heart of God, Moses related differently to the children of Abraham and expressed God’s compassion. He came before the Lord on that basis and declared, “You cannot destroy this people because of who You are and what You are.” In the same way, we must reveal the Father’s love and compassion to this generation.

I want to see the Body of Christ pray for this present age in a way that evokes God to move according to His nature and what He really is in His great love for humanity. God is love (1 John 4:16). I contend that the Church knows the Lord on one level, but I believe that God wants to reveal a whole new level of Himself to us. If we see this side of God’s nature, then we will relate to the world differently. By His Spirit, we are to be an expression of God’s nature and personality—His compassion, mercy, and lovingkindness—to all the earth. God is determined to glorify Himself to His creation. In His compassion, He is driven to blot out iniquity and heal His people.

When you look at the Rapture doctrine and other end-time theologies, you have to ask, “What is wonderful about God destroying all these people and sending them to hell?” That is man’s thinking, but God is not a man (Numbers 23:19). When will Christianity say like Moses, “You know what, God? That just doesn’t sound like You”? I want the Body of Christ to have a tremendous meeting with the Lord that reveals God’s true personality—one where He pours into us His compassion, His emotions, and His heartsickness over this age. I cannot think of anything greater than God honestly revealing His love to people. We need to be overwhelmed with how much God loves us, how He wants to be with us, how He wants to remove everything that separates us from Him and everything that differentiates us from Himself. God wants us to be with Him and be like Him so we can glorify Him throughout eternity.
